Starting a blog is easy, but there are few things that you can do to make sure your blog stays on track and stands out. Here are 7 easy one-word steps to do that:
The good thing about blogging is that you don't have to worry about knowing how to code because there are so many platforms already available that have customizable templates that are easy to use. Literally, you can just google it (see above)
You have many options here: Wix, Wordpress, Squarespace, Blogger, and more. Some of them can be used free of charge (without custom url) and some cost money. Choose one that works best with your brand and concept, but take your time and research it before choose. You might regret your decision and it can difficult to switch it over.
What do you want to write about? What could you write about over and over again? Fashion…sports…music? The possibilities are endless!
Make sure you have this figured out because then you can figure the niche audience that you can tap into. There are people on the internet that are specifically looking for music bloggers, fashion bloggers, and more, so you want to be able to label yourself to do so.
Also, once you pick your topic, you'll also want to find something that makes you particularly unique. There are tons of fashion bloggers... what makes your fashion sense particularly special? Is it your location? Your background? Those little details will make you stand out and will make people want to follow you along.
Note: This doesn't mean you can't do the occasional post outside of your blogging genre! Feel free to do so! However, you want to make sure you have something that you are writing about all the time that will help people better understand your brand.
How often do you want to post? Weekly? Daily? Monthly?
This is important not only for your audience to know when to keep up with you, but also for you to hold yourself accountable in posting.
I've put myself on a twice a week schedule because I want to push myself to make lots of content and to continue to develop my brand. However, I started on a once a week schedule while I was figuring out what I wanted to post.
It all depends on your topic and type of content. If you're posting your fashion, that could be daily #OOTD's. If you're writing something that takes longer to put together, you might need to spread out your content. It's all about keeping a consistent schedule.
logo (Very important! You can make it simple or get fancy with the help of an artsy friend)
color scheme (What colors match your aesthetic?)
fonts (There are so many beautiful fonts!)
website design (your platform will help with this! Make sure you can customize!)
All of this takes time to perfect and it can be updated and changed, but you want to have a solid base to start.
Buy the URL. This is essential.
If you are going to invest your time and energy in this blog, you should be willing to invest a few dollars a month in order to make it as professional as possible. This is one of the mistakes I see people trying to start a blog do. A myblog.tumblr.com or myblog.wordpress.com doesn't seem legit.
If you buy your url, people know you are serious about your blogging and will want to click to see what you've created and invested in. Also, it makes your site look so much more put together.
Believe me.. it's worth it!
Make content! Create, create, create!
Make listicles, feature lots of visuals, and don't forgot to ask your audience what they want to see.
Share, share, share!
Every time I write a post, the first thing I do is post the link all over the internet - my Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, AND MORE.
Use your social media to promote what you're doing, whether that be on your personal social media, a Facebook page for your blog, or to all of your friends over text. You want people to see what you're doing. If you're featuring a person, band, or company, TAG THEM!
There are blogging communities that will want to read your content. You want to reach them! Use hashtags, follow other bloggers, and send them your stuff!
Let me know if you have any questions or have a blog of your own! I would love to check it out!
